As many of you know, I’m on my way to Costa Rica! My first trip was two years ago in a desperate attempt to get out of dodge and rest at a yoga retreat (even though I didn’t practice yoga).
I learned a lot about myself on that trip:
- “My” yoga was perfect exactly how it was
- I did have the capacity to relax
- I desperately needed to refill my well, on purpose
- I had an adventurous spirit, even though I had not seen her in a decade
But I learned one particularly surprising tidbit spurred by comments from my new friends.
They told me that I was fun and funny. They complimented my light-hearted nature and infectious smile.
I didn’t see myself that way. At home I was serious and exhausted – that’s a long way from fun and light-hearted. I was sure that no one at home would describe me that way.
But they were right. Those beautiful qualities are part of the ESSENCE of who I am, despite having been crowded out by life’s responsibilities.
The retreat created space so that my true self could show itself, little by little. I didn’t know that was what I would discover with creating space, it just revealed itself to me.
So I made a commitment to create more space at home – intuitively knowing that it would foster health and clarity. And that has proven itself to be true.
Contemplation: What does creating space mean to you? What would it look like? What will you do today to create space in your life?
